FIFA exists to govern football and to develop the game around the world. Since 2016, the organization has been fast evolving into a body that can more effectively serve our game for the benefit of the entire world. The new FIFA is modernizing football to be global, accessible and inclusive in all aspects. Not just on one or two continents, but everywhere. Under our vision to make football truly global, we will help develop football everywhere so that there are at least 50 national teams and 50 clubs from all continents that can compete at a top competitive level.

Following a dazzling Final Draw for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 the final tournament match schedule has been published on FIFA+. Given the compact nature of Qatar, event organizers were able to assign, for the first time ever, group stage games to a stadium and kick-off time for each matchday after the final draw, optimizing the match schedule for the benefit and comfort of spectators, teams, media and the global audience.

A total of 64 games will be played to decide the winners of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. See when and where the action will take place.

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Match Schedule

Qatar, hosts of the FIFA World Cup 2022, will play the opening fixture of the tournament against Ecuador at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar on November 20. They were initially set to play on November 21, but the football body made the announcement on August 11 that a unanimous decision was taken by the Bureau of the FIFA Council to bring the opening match and ceremony of this year’s tournament at Al Bayt Stadium by one day. This ensures the continuity of a long-standing tradition where the FIFA World Cup begins with the first match featuring either the hosts or the defending champions. The Maroons have never qualified for the World Cup finals since their competitive international debut in 1970.

Senegal, who initially were to face the Netherlands in the opening fixture, will now play in the second scheduled match on November 21 at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha, Qatar. The fixture is preceded by England taking on Asian giants Iran in the opening fixture of Group B at the Khalifa International Stadium. Defending champions France, who were drawn into Group D, will play their first game against Australia. Record five-time winners Brazil, part of Group G, lock horns with Serbia in their opening encounter while Portugal, who secured qualification from the European playoffs, clash against Ghana.

Canada, the first team to qualify for FIFA World Cup 2022 from CONCACAF and making their only second appearance at football’s showpiece event, will face Belgium in their round one tie. The FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16 will run from December 3 to December 7, while the quarter-finals are slated for December 9 to December 11. The semi-finals will be held on December 14 and 15, while the Bronze final is scheduled for December 18.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 final will be played at the Lusail Iconic Stadium on December 19.

The Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 will see 32 teams from five confederations compete for the biggest prize in football. The teams have been divided into eight groups of four (A to H) and only the top two teams will advance to the knockout stages. As many as 64 matches will be played during the course of 29 days, also making it the shortest 32-team FIFA World Cup in history.

Except for the first two days, four matches will be played each day during the group stages. Each of the 32 teams will play three matches in the group stages before the knockouts begin with the round of 16 (pre-quarterfinals) on December 3. Hosts Qatar will kick off the 2022 World Cup against Ecuador in Group A at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor on November 20. Defending champions France will play their first match against Australia at 12:30 AM IST on November 23 while five-time champions Brazil will start against Serbia at 12:30 AM IST on November 25. India is 2 hours 30 minutes ahead of Qatar.

The semi-finals will be played on December 14 and 15, both at 12:30 AM IST, while the final will take place at the Lusail Iconic Stadium on December 18. This will be the first time that a country from the Middle East will host the FIFA World Cup and consequently, the first edition being held outside the typical June-July window earmarked for the quadrennial showpiece.
